Welcome to the FIRST Tasty Tuesday!

Hi, hello, I am so incredibly excited for this post. I shared on Sunday, and again yesterday, that I was going live with my first ever blog meme that I am personally hosting, called...drum roll please...

Very simple and easy to follow, just pick something food related to write about. Really, that's it. Share a family favorite recipe. Share something you want to try, either something you want to cook yourself or even something you saw on a menu or cooking show that really got your tastebuds going. It doesn't have to be something you cooked this week, it doesn't have to be something you cooked at all.

Is it hot where you are? Have you been craving iced or frozen coffee drinks or fruity yumminess? Do you live in a place, like me, where lately the air hurts your face it is SO cold, and you have a go-to hot beverage or yummy soup that warms you right up? Share those kinds of things!! Were you a Frappuccino addict once and sometimes miss them (maybe you moved to a really, really rural area like I did after living in Southern California lol and the nearest Starbucks is hours away!)? Share what your favorite Frapp was, what made you love it, why you don't indulge anymore...

ANYTHING, absolutely ANYTHING food or drink related,
share share share away!!

So, last night my momma decided to make her homemade beef stew for supper tonight. I thought instantly, "You know what we need to go with that? Homemade bread!" I am a SUCKER for homemade bread, and there's just something so comforting and welcoming about the smell of bread baking. Here's not one, but two of my family's favorite homemade bread recipes.

This white bread recipe has been in my repertoire since I was 14 years old. My aunt got me a subscription to Taste of Home magazine as a gift, and I've never been without it since. I am a proud Volunteer Field Editor for the magazine and have tons of fun submitting recipes, sharing ideas, and talking with everyone on our Facebook page. This recipe was originally shared by Joanne Shewchuk from Saskatchewan, Canada.

Country White Bread
  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 2 cups warm water (110º to 115º)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 6½ to 7 cups all purpose flour
  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar, salt, eggs, oil and 3 cups flour; beat on medium speed until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
  • Turn dough onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Punch down dough. Divide in half and shape into loaves. Place in two greased 9x5-in. loaf pans. Cover with kitchen towels; let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 375°.
  • Bake until golden brown, 25-30 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool.

Our other favorite homemade bread recipe is a little different, its a cornmeal yeast bread, and it is really hearty and super tasty. I found it in my February/March 2008 issue of Taste of Home. Fred Barnsdale of Pahokee, Florida shared it and we love it alongside heartier soups and stews, as well as chili. Its not crumbly like regular cornbread can be. It also is great shaped into sub rolls and used for beef dip sandwiches.

Yeast Corn Bread Loaf

  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • 2¼ to 2¾ cups all purpose flour
    • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. Add the cornmeal, milk powder, butter, sugar, salt, 1-1/4 cups flour and remaining water. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.
    • Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a bowl coated with cooking spray, turning once to coat top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
    • Punch dough down; shape into a loaf. Place in a 9x5-in. loaf pan coated with cooking spray. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.
